Citizenship Document lies about Australian Values
If you want to make a response
"We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal ...". So began the US Declaration of Independence of 1776.
But by today's standards this was a fraud. They didn't mean "all men". Many Americans still owned black slaves. "All men" was a euphemism for 'all non-black men'. The contradiction between such lofty words, and the actual reality, eventually took the United States to Civil War.
The draft Australian citizenship document (released August 2007) goes down the same track. This document talks of Australia values that include:
- respect for individual worth,
- freedom of association,
- equality under the law,
- equality of men and women,
- equality of opportunity.
However, the reality is very different. The most important Act that deals with equality of men and women (the Sex Discrimination Act, 1984) actually excludes men. Like the Declaration of Independence, it talks about one thing but means another. The Sex Discrimination Act talks about 'sex', but this is a euphemism for 'non-males'.
Many Australian laws, State laws, public policies, operating guidelines, education resources and codes of conduct also adopt the same prejudiced euphemisms - that 'sex' and 'gender' mean 'non-males'. Discrimination against males, because of their gender, is completely legal in Australia, and is a common experience. This effects how male individuals are valued, who men can associate with, the opportunities men have, and how men are treated in media and the Courts.
In many cases, Australian men and boys are provided with lower levels of services - including health, education and support - than Australian women. Some tax-funded service outlets, refuse to serve men at all.
Further, many Australians believe in a version of fundamentalist wimdria law. Often tax-funded, these people attempt to get their wimdria law beliefs into Australian law and public policy wherever possible. Public funds are used to indoctrinate and support people with anti-male views, and to lobby for more anti-male policies.
Consider this example. Recently, a Joint Parliamentary Committee investigated why boys were performing badly in schools. The Committee concluded that boys were doing worse than girls, and one of the reasons was because male teachers were rare, particularly in Primary Schools.
One of the Committee's recommendations was for schools to employ more male teachers. However, this decision was derailed by the Sex Discrimination Commissioner, using the Sex Discrimination Act, in response to pressure from female dominated teachers unions.
So much for equal worth and equal opportunity for a generation of Australian school boys. In this example, the Sex Discrimination Act is used as an instrument to facilitate discrimination.

Potential migrants should be told the truth about Australia, so they can make an informed choice.
The people who support the prejudiced nature of many Australian laws and practices, shouldn't try to mislead potential migrants about Australia.
Comments on the draft Values proposal can be directed to Minister Kevin Andrews (here).
Alternatively you can contact your local member, or media outlet, and suggest that you want to live in an Australia that "walks its talk" and lives the Australian Values it claims to have. It's time to remove anti-male bias from Australian laws and regulations, starting with the Sex Discrimination Act.
You may have lodged a complaint about discrimination, or inappropriate activity, effecting a man, father or boy. Your complaint may have been mocked, ignored, or fobbed off because the rules didn't apply to males.
If so, send us your story. No breaches of privacy, or inappropriate identifying details, please.
